RTBF documentary about the cyberwar

You can see or watch again the program at several later days, but this is my appreciation.

First it is never bad that programs show that the cyber-underworld (for money or for patriotic cyberattacks) is very well organised and that our capacity to respond to their attacks is very limited. It creates a sense of urgency.

But you have also to show that things are being done and that the democratic world has means to defend itself against cyberextorsion and cyberterrorism and that these are having some effects, even if we don't see them everyday. The last year for example several cybercrime commercial organisations and infrastructures have been cut off by all other parties on the internet, blacking them and their thousands of botnets totally out. This is not enough, but we can do several things that can make a huge difference. It would be lowcost for us and enormously damaging for the cyberunderworld.

Secondly if you show as an answer only some discussions between a professor and some military cadets than you only reinforce that feeling. You had to show also that the US army has for the moment one of the most sophisticated cyberdefenses and cybermonitoring capabilities around. These aren't perfect - as the virus brought in by USB lately has shown - but they are still a standard that most other countries still can only dream off. Especially our country.

Thirdly it is a bit strange that you talk about the cyberwar and spend money going to the US, Russia and Estonia while you could find much more shocking things if you only would have investigated a bit the situation in Belgium. Just reading this blog and EKZ.skynetblogs.be may already give you some leads for some good questions. And also hear it is not because we lack for the moment the official structures and organisations that there aren't groups of people working very hard - some without any payment and even gratification - to keep the Belgian internet as safe as possible. And these aren't only the people around these blogs.

The situation is not that much better in other European countries if you don't believe the declarations for the press and do some research.
