Belgian journalist buys Belgian VISAcard information on the internet

The thing that the journalist forgot to mention was that in the report by Symantec (but it is something everyone looked over) the most valuable information a total identification was. THis means all the information you would need to become that person, including address, birth, ID and so on. This is why the security of our EID is so important and this is why the last two big crimedatabases that were being found on the internet seemed to be an agglomeration of different pieces of information.

So imagine that you have not only the VISA information about a person, but you could also buy all the other personal information digitally about that person because the banking trojan intercepted also that information (that isn't secured because it is so called public information - which is a wrong argument because you can't collect all that information digitally any other way for the moment).

THe information about the active card costs about 6 Euro. THe damage for each compromised creditcard is more than 1000 Euro. So why is the PCI standard that should securize ecommerce such a set of smokescreens and extended deadlines ? Maybe is ecommerce the toxic part of the creditcard business just as subprime was for the banks ? How much can they afford to lose each year on fraud all these credit card companies and ecommerce business ? Or even better, how much do their owners and investors accept that they lose every year on fraud ? In an economic recession in which money and credit are very hard to come by and every penny earned is for keepers it is plain stupid to lose that much money on such fraud that could sometimes be halted by investments that would only cost a small percentage of the total cost of fraud.

The legal person in me says that the journalist should have contacted the FCCU before doing the transaction to be sure that he wasn't totally acting illegally. For the Belgian cybercriminality law he was. This is why this law needs to be explained or amended.
